Why 'hi' fails
A bare greeting puts all the work on the other person. They have to invent a topic, guess your mood and decide if you are worth the effort โ usually while five other chats are open. Every message you send should hand them an easy next move.
Openers that get replies
Specific, light, and answerable in one line. That is the whole formula.
- React to something they posted: their quest, their username, their status.
- Ask a small opinion question: best late-night food, worst film they finished anyway.
- Offer a tiny bit of yourself first โ people mirror what they receive.
- Use a two-option question. Choosing is easier than composing.
Keeping it alive past message three
Conversations run on follow-ups, not new topics. When someone answers, ask about the answer instead of firing an unrelated second question. Two follow-ups on one topic beat six unrelated openers.
Match their message length and energy. If they send one line, do not send six. If they write paragraphs, do not reply with 'lol'.
Things that quietly kill a chat
- Interview mode: question, answer, question, answer, with nothing of yourself.
- Asking for photos or socials early.
- Complaining about being ignored.
- Copy-pasting the same opener to everyone โ people can tell.
When to move on
If two good-faith attempts get one-word replies, that is your answer, and it is not personal. Anonymous chat is a numbers game with no cost to starting again. Open the online list, pick someone new, and try one of the openers above.
