Secret rooms explained

4 min read ยท updated 2026

A secret room is a throwaway chat room with a link instead of an account. Nobody registers, nobody appears in a directory, and the room can be wiped when you are finished. This guide explains when that is the right tool and when it is not.

What a secret room actually is

It is a room identified by a room ID rather than by membership. Anyone holding the link can join and pick a display name for that room only. There is no signup step, no email, and no profile attached to what you say.

Because access is the link, the link is the security. Treat it like a key: share it in a channel you trust, and do not post it publicly unless you want strangers in the room.

Secret room vs DM vs group

  • DM โ€” one person, ongoing, tied to your chat identity.
  • Group โ€” named, joinable by handle, made to persist and grow.
  • Secret room โ€” a few people, one purpose, gone when you are done.

Good uses for a throwaway room

  • Coordinating something quickly with people who do not want accounts.
  • A side conversation you do not want attached to your main handle.
  • Sharing plans with a small group without creating yet another chat app.

Wiping a room

Wiping clears the messages for everyone in the room, immediately. It does not un-send anything a person already screenshotted or copied. Assume anything you type can be captured by anyone who can read it โ€” that is true of every chat product, ours included.

If the conversation needs to be permanent and recoverable, use a group instead. Secret rooms are built to be forgotten.
